The Model Wing was set up to promote the full size Project taking place at R.A.F. Shawbury. We fly the models at airshows around the country, but primarily at WestonPark and Cosford Model Airshows. The team is made up from members of the R.A.F. Shawbury Model Flying Club, who give their time to make, repair, maintain and ultimately to fly the models. The team are more than happy to talk “across the fence”, to any interested parties who wish to know more about the models.
The display usually starts with towing the Assault Glider Trust banner, which is in the capable hands of Frank Fletcher. Then a “tug” is used to tow up the Horsa Glider, very much like what would have happened during World War II and especially during the taking of Pegasus Bridge. The Horsa glider is released at height and glides to a graceful landing to complete the display. It is then the turn of the Whitley and Hadriann or Waco to perform.
As well as flying a display, the Assault Glider Team also run a tent, which is usually, manned by Steve Wright, Christine Fletcher and newcomer to the team, Chaz Lloyd. Steve and Chaz are on hand to answer any questions and also to contribute their knowledge and expertise about the full size project at R.A.F. Shawbury. There are information boards and leaflets to hand out and people are encouraged to forward their war stories to our website for inclusion.
Christine’s job is to raise much needed funds for the Model Wing, it takes a lot of money to keep the models flying and any contributions and donations are extremely welcome. We would also like to encourage people to provide a donation in the envelopes provided to gain tax relief for the Trust.
There are also items on sale which may interest the ladies and children who attend model shows and who are usually forgotten, such as jewellery, keyrings, rings etc., and also toys for the children, which also include “Goody Bags” or “Lucky Bags” as we used to know them! A raffle is usually held as well, so please give generously.
Donations and craft sales have been steadily increasing, which is great news for the Assault Glider Trust Model Wing, thank you to everyone who has made a contribution, this is greatly appreciated.
