Engineering Diploma Students Train at the AGT and RAF Shawbury

Students from Birmingham Frankley School have recently completed a ground breaking engineering diploma working with Assault Glider Trust at RAF Shawbury.   The Diploma in Engineering is an exciting and innovative qualification for all young people that immerses them into an Engineering environment and has crucially been designed to incorporate and blend the best of academic and applied learning.

On the 25th and 26th of February RAF Shawbury and The Assault Glider Trust produced a maintenance module of the Specialised Engineering Diploma for the students of the Birmingham school.  The Diploma consisted of general engineering tasks and applications over a two day residential stay.

The Students conducted a number of maintenance tasks to develop and improve upon the theoretical knowledge they had obtained from the classroom.  Warrant Officer Ed Gibson and Chief Technician Nick Bowles, who ran two of the maintenance workshops, were most impressed with the work conducted by the Diploma Students and mentioned that dedication and maturity was shown throughout each activity.

As part of the stay the students also had a tour of the Station and viewed the helicopters of the Defence Helicopter Flying School, Air Traffic Control Squadron and got up close and personal to the Hawk jet trainers at the Aircraft Maintenance and Storage Unit. Rachel Abbiss, the Curator at the Assault Glider Trust said,’ we are pleased to be able to offer these innovative diplomas at RAF Shawbury through the trust.  The students really enjoyed their stay and enjoyed completing the tasks.’
